From Curtis about this image:

When Birds Dream

They say if you don’t like the weather in Newfoundland wait 5 minutes, I don’t know about that but 5 hours can certainly change a lot.
A few evenings back I drove to St. Bride’s, Newfoundland for a little sunset/sunrise shooting. My first stop was to be Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve. Located on the southwestern Avalon Peninsula it is one of Newfoundland’s largest seabird colonies. It is estimated that the site is home to 24,000 northern gannets, 20,000 black-legged kittiwakes, 20,000 common murres, and 2,000 thick-billed murres.
I wasn’t planning to shoot during the night. There was fog thick as pea soup and the wind was howling something fierce when I made camp. Imagine my surprise when I was woken around 1 am by a nearby foghorn to an endless star filled sky. That’s what I like to call Newfoundland irony.
I make no claims to be a pro seabird photographer, but I did have an idea, I had time and I was awake…sort of. In my experience, that is more than enough to get me hiking into the darkness. Destination “Bird Rock”.
This was absolutely one of the most surreal moments in my career to date. To stand on that pinnacle, not a soul around. Just that sky, a cool ocean breeze, and the subdued murmur of about 2000 sleeping birds. Oh and a blaring, but serendipitous foghorn.
