It has been way too long since my last opportunity to get out into the wilderness with some proper astro-landscape gear! Over the last year I haven’t been able to do much at all, and when I did go, I experienced worse and worse gear failures.

Finally, two nights ago, I was able to return to one of my favorite places on the planet, and with a decent setup too. It was for the production of a massive project that I have been working on for many months- a Milky Way Photography workshop for the photography website SLR Lounge.

The location, as any science fiction fan will know, is the Trona Pinnacles. I’ve been here many times over the decades, first as a kid in the boy scouts, and then as early as 2004 or 2005 when the first affordable DSLRs started to hit the market.

It never gets old! If you’re a geek like I am, it is a downright emotional, even spiritual experience, to sit quietly among the stone monoliths, and listen to the theme songs of Star Trek, Star Wars, or Firefly.

Light pollution from Trona, CA, and other nearby cities has gotten worse over the years, but it’s still a great place to see the Milky Way with your naked eye, and to photograph.

EXIF: Nikon D750, Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8, Slik 700DX tripod.
16 exposures for the sky, each 30 sec @ f/2.8 & ISO 6400; noise-reduced using Starry Landscape Stacker.
1 exposure for the earth, 600 sec @ f/4 & ISO 1600; noise-reduced using “Single Pixel NR” in Capture One Pro 10.
Both images captured in sequence at 14mm, without any other camera or lighting changes.
